Privacy Policy for Kusalam
Last updated 30 August 2026
Kusalam is a family video-calling app built around one idea: a parent or grandparent should
be able to reach their family with one tap, on a phone set up once and never touched again.
This page describes exactly what the app collects to make that work, and nothing more.
What Kusalam collects
- Your Google account. Signing in uses Google Sign-In, which shares your
name, email address and profile photo with Kusalam to create your account. Kusalam never
asks for a phone number and has no field to store one.
- Family and member data. The family name, each member's display name, and
a small photo you or they choose (cropped to a 256-pixel square) — stored so your family can
see who they're calling. Visible only to members of the same family.
- Device status. For a phone set up as a dedicated calling device: battery
level and when it was last active, so the family can tell whether it's charged and reachable.
- Call records. Who was on a call, how long it lasted, and when — never a
recording or transcript of the call itself.
- A push notification token, so your phone can be woken up for an incoming
call while the app isn't open.
- Camera and microphone, live, only while you are on a video call. Video
and audio are relayed through Cloudflare's RealtimeKit service to the other person on the
call; Kusalam does not record or store either.
- On-device face detection, used only to help centre a photo you're
choosing as someone's profile picture. This runs entirely on your phone — the photo and the
detection never leave it until you confirm the photo.
- Diagnostic events — things like app version, which step a call reached,
and how long it took — sent for troubleshooting, tagged with a random id rather than your
identity, and never containing call content or a phone number.
What Kusalam does not do
- No advertising, and no advertising SDKs of any kind.
- No location tracking.
- No access to your contacts, SMS, or call log.
- No selling or renting of any data, to anyone, ever.
Who this data is shared with
Only the services that make the app work, each acting on Kusalam's behalf and bound by
its own privacy terms — never sold or shared for their own purposes:
- Google Firebase — sign-in, the family database, and push notifications.
- Cloudflare — relaying live audio and video during a call (RealtimeKit),
and hosting the one small server this app talks to.
- Axiom — storing the diagnostic events described above.
Deleting your data
A family admin can remove a member, or delete the family entirely, from Settings inside the
app — this removes that data immediately. To delete your account and everything tied to it,
email the address below and it will be done by hand.
Children
Kusalam is not directed at children. Creating an account requires Google Sign-In, which
requires meeting Google's own minimum age for an account. The family member being called —
often the reason this app exists at all — never signs in and never provides any information
directly.
Changes to this policy
If what Kusalam collects ever changes, this page will change with it, and the date at the
top will move.
